Model Sheet: Marvin the Martian Limited Edition Hand-Painted Cel #20/750 (Warner Bros., 1996). In 1948, Chuck Jones directed the classic Looney Tunes cartoon, "Haredevil Hare," which introduced this world to that intrepid space traveler Marvin the Martian. This hand-painted limited edition animation cel was produced by Warner Bros. Animation Art using the same methods employed in preparing cels for actual production. The background drawings were adapted from an original Marvin the martian model sheet from Warner Bros. Classic Animation, and special attention was paid in the printing in order to capture the delicate line quality. This art measures 16" x 13," and is in Excellent condition. Includes a certificate of authenticity.
This model sheet is based on original Studio art of the short-tempered gunslinger. In the world of animation, a model sheet is a collection of drawings of a specific character used to show his varying attitudes and characteristics. This limited edition cel began with a drawing by Dan Haskett from which a master inking was created by Laurie Dindis. This inking was then silk-screened onto an acetate sheet (or "cel") along with the Warner Bros. seal. Each cel was then expertly hand-painted on the reverse side. The background is a high-quality lithograph composed of several different poses of Yosemite Sam created by Dan Haskett in a model sheet format. The edition number was hand-inked on each cel in a special edition size of only 350, released in 1998. Upon completion of the edition, the original artwork was archived.
Each piece measures 16.5" inches across x 13.5" inches in height (unframed). It is applied to a Fine Art lithographic background. The cel has the official Warner Brothers gold seal (lower corner). Looney Tunes is an American animated comedy short film series produced by Warner Bros. from 1930 to 1969 alongside its sister series, Merrie Melodies, during the golden age of American animation. They introduced Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Wile E. Coyote, Road Runner, Sylvester, Tweety, Granny, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, Marvin the Martian, Pepé Le Pew, Speedy Gonzales, the Tasmanian Devil, and many other cartoon characters. After Bugs Bunny became the breakout recurring star of Merrie Melodies, and Looney Tunes went to color in the early 1940s, the two series gradually lost their distinctions and shorts were assigned to each series more randomly.
